What is blogging about?
There’s some kind of minor minor scuffle going on between blogging heavyweights, who seem hellbent on defining what “blogging” means. This, by the way, is what blogging is really about: arguing over what blogging is about. For a bit of perspective, I thought I might consult the masses and see what they have to say. I queried a few search engines and have included the top 6 results of each here.
According to Google, blogging is about:
- Making and changing minds (the definition Doc Searls is arguing to defend)
- Changing your mind
- Making
- Transparency, transparency and more transparency
- Conversations
- Making information creation available to anyone
Yahoo search finds that, blogging is about:
- First, reading
- Niches
- As mainstream as it gets (the sentence begins: “If Donald Trump is blogging, then…”)
- Breaking the rules
- The form’s very simplicity
- (No mention of my search phrase, but the article is titled “MSN Gets Into the Paid Blogging Game”)
Here is what Bloglines thinks blogging is about:
- Relationships
- Words
- About 12 hours later than normal (sentence starts “Heck, even my…”)
- Voicing opinions
- Finding potential value, laying a baseline for that value and periodically checking if that value is being provided (with regard to “business blogging” specifically)
- The intensely personal, direct authentic voice
The thing that is striking to me about all this is that no two search engines agree on any of these definitions. I think Blogging will continue to be a fluid term, defined by each to suit their own needs. And rightly so, that’s what makes it so compelling. So here I will offer my own definition: Blogging is about presenting oneself online in whatever form is most suitable.

HA! Is that like the google name game where you do a search for
“Dan Phiffer is”
“Dan Phiffer looks like”
“Dan Phiffer died”
etc.
God, My Space hurts my soul.

I think you will find as many definitions as there are people, perhaps that defines what blogging is. (Along the same lines as your definition)
